Construction of the Red Chris mine commenced in May 2012, and was completed in November 2014. Power was provided to the site via a 16 kilometre 287kV power line connecting the mine to the Tatogga substation. The Iskut extension of the Northwest Transmission Line
(NTL) was built by Imperial from the terminus of the NTL at the Bob Quinn substation to the newly constructed substation at Tatogga Lake. In December 2014 Imperial completed and closed the sale of the 93 kilometre 287kV Iskut extension of the NTL to BC Hydro.
Plant commissioning commenced in late 2014. Red Chris produced its first copper concentrate on February 17, 2015 and the first loads of concentrate were trucked to Stewart Bulk Terminals on February 27, 2015. The first shipment
of Red Chris concentrate was loaded onto the M/V Edward Oldendorff on April 11, 2015.
Mining activities are focused on both the East and Main zones
, which will eventually merge to form one pit. During 2015 Red Chris operations is focusing on maximizing the throughput and metallurgical performance of the mill and ongoing construction work on the tailings facility. Commercial production was achieved on July 1, 2015.
