Huckleberry is an open pit copper mine owned and operated by Huckleberry Mines Ltd (HML). Imperial owns a 50% interest in HML. The Huckleberry property, located 88 kilometres from Houston, British Columbia, covers 19,780 hectares consisting of two mining leases covering 2,422 hectares and 39 mineral claims encompassing approximately 17,358 hectares.
In January 2016 HML suspended pit operations at the Huckleberry mine due to the low copper price. During 2015 significant strides were made to reduce mine operating costs, however the realized savings were not sufficient to offset the declining copper price. The suspension affected approximately 100 of the 260 workforce, with the remaining employees working to continue milling stockpiled ore. Subsequently in February 2016, HML announced its operations would be suspended once the stockpiles have been milled, anticipated to be around August 2016. At that time, the Huckleberry mine will be temporarily placed on care and maintenance until there is an improvement in the price of copper.
